Lesson 2. Final Consonants  (= 받침)

1.  받침

[yak]: medicine

미국 [mi-guk]: the United States

[chaek]: book

 

2.       받침

한국 [han-guk]: Korea

[san]: mountain

[paen]: pen

핸드폰 [haen-deu-pon]: cell phone

 

3.       받침

[gohd]: soon

얻다 [uh-dda]: to earn

믿다 [mid-da]: to believe

 

4.       받침

[moohl]: water

선물 [suhn-moohl]: gift

달력 [dal-lyuhg]: calendar

맏딸 [mad-ddal]: the first daughter

 

5.       받침

엄마 [uh-mma]: mom

[jaem]: jam

냄새 [naem-sae]: smell

 

6.       받침

You drop the sound right before pronouncing it. You press your lips slightly when pronouncing.

[ib]: mouth

[bab]: rice

 

7.       받침

When is 받침 it is not pronounced as “s”, but as “t”.

[ pronounced as ]: clothes

[gohd] : soon vs  [gohd]: place – pronounced the same

햇빛 [haet-bit or 핻빗]: sunlight

 

8.      받침

When is the first consonant it is not pronounced, but when it is a final consonant it is pronounced as “ng”.

[ang] – not an actual word

고양이 [go-yang-i]: cat

성공 [suhng-gong]: success

영어 [yeong-uh]: English 

 

9.       & 받침

[nat = / ]: daytime

[nat]: face

젖다 [ juhd-da = 젓다]: to get soaked

민낯 [min-nat = 민낫]: a bare face

 

10.    받침

[uhk]: 100 million

부엌 [uhk] : kitchen 

When you combine / consonants with other ones, the way they sound changes and it’s called consonant assimilation. You’ll learn more about this pronunciation rule in the next lesson (Lesson 3.)

기억이 [기어기]

부엌이 [부어키]

해질녘 [hae-jil-lyuhk]: sunset

 

11.    받침

[pat = = = ]: read bean

[guht = = = ]: outside

[mit = = = ]: bottom

 

12.   받침

ㅍ 받침 sounds exactly the same with ㅂ 받침.

잎[ip] : leaf = 입[ip] : mouth

짚[jip] : straw = 집 [jip] : house

옆[yup] : side =엽[yup] : lobe

 [ahp] : front = 압[ahp] : pressure

 

13.    받침 

When is used as the first consonant, it has “h” sound. But when it’s used as a final consonant, the sound of is determined by the following consonant in the next letter. [We will learn more in-depth about this in the Consonant Assimilation lesson.]

좋아요 [조아요]: when  받침 is followed by ㅇ consonant in the next letter, ㅎ 받침 doesn’t produce any sound.

좋네 [존네] when  받침 is followed by ㄴ consonant in the next letter, ㅎ받침 produces ㄴ 받침 sound

좋게 [ 조케] when  받침 is followed by  consonant in the next letter, ㅎ + ㄱ produces  sound.

좋다 조타] when  받침 is followed by  consonant in the next letter, ㅎ + ㄷ produces  sound.

좋지 [조치] when ㅎ 받침 is followed by ㅈ consonant in the next letter, ㅎ+ㅈ produces  sound.

좋소 [좃소] when ㅎ 받침 is followed by  consonant in the next letter, ㅎ 받침 produces ㅅ받침 sound. 

 

하얗다[하야타] : to be white

하얗게 [하얗케] : whitely

놓다[노타]  : to put sth on

놓네 [논네

좋다 [좉다] : to be good, to like

그렇다[그러타] : to be like that, to be that way

그렇지만 [그러치만] : but
