Practice 2. Speaking Practice : Introduce Yourselves in Korean

Listen to how three people below introduce themselves in Korean. At first play, try comprehending as much as you can by yourself without the script or translation! 🙂

1. Vicky from Korea (한국인 빅키) 🇰🇷

Korean Script : 안녕하세요. 제 한국 이름은 심효정이고 영어 이름은 빅키예요. 대학교를 졸업한 지는 꽤 오래 됐고, 대학교 때 영문학이랑 영어 통번역학을 전공했어요. 지금은 가르치는 일을 하고 있고, 영어랑 한국어를 둘 다 가르쳐요. 언어를 가르치는 게 항상 쉬운 건 아니지만 제가 좋아하는 일이라서 즐겁게 할 수 있어요. 저는 나이가 어리진 않지만 아직도 꿈이 있는데, 그건 바로 재미있고 또 많은 사람들에게 감동을 주는 소설이나 동화를 쓰는 거예요. 언젠간 꿈을 이룰 수 있었으면 좋겠어요. 여러분은 어떤 꿈을 가지고 있나요? 

English Translation : Hello. My Korean name is Shim Hyojeong, and my English name is Vicky. It’s been quite a long time since I graduated university, and I majored in English literature and English-Korean translation. Now I have a teaching job, and I teach both English and Korean. Teaching a language isn’t always easy, but it’s the work I love, so I can do it joyfully. I am not so young but I still have a dream, and that is to write a novel or a children’s story that is fun and touches people’s heart. I hope I could make my dream come true someday. What kind of dream do you guys have?

Verb-ㄴ/은 지 (time) 이/가 되다 : to have been (time) since I verb-ed  [This grammar will be covered in Beginner 3 Course!]

꽤 : quite, pretty

오래(adv, noun) : long (time)

문학 : literature / 영문학: English Literature

통역 & 번역 : interpretation & translation (You can put “학” after the name of the field you study.)

noun을/를 전공하다: to major in noun

둘 다 : both

항상 Adj-ㄴ/은 건 아니다: Something is not always V/A

V/A-지는(=진) 않다 : not necessarily (or not very) V/A

그건 바로 : …and that is ~ (used when revealing something or emphasizing that something is the answer) 

꿈 : dream (꿈을 꾸다: to dream)

소설: novel / 동화(童話) : children’s story

감동을 주다: to touch one’s heart

언젠가 (or 언젠간) : someday, one day

꿈을 이루다: to make one’s dream come true, to fulfill one’s dream

V/A-았/었으면 좋겠다 : I hope I V/A [This grammar will be covered in Beginner 3 Course!]

2. Tony from Australia (호주 사람 토니) 🇦🇺

Korean Transcript : 안녕하세요 여러분, 제 이름은 토니이고 한국어를 배우기 시작한 지 2년 정도 됐어요. 저는 지금 호주에서 대학원에 다니는데 전공은 물리치료예요. 저는 시간 있을 때 주로 운동을 하고 카페나 식당에서 친구들이랑 맛있는 걸 먹어요. 그리고 여행하면서 새로운 곳을 탐험하는 걸 좋아해요. 제가 한국어를 공부하는 특별한 이유는 없지만 그냥 한국어의 매력에 끌려서 공부하고 있어요. 여러분도 열심히 공부하시고 행운을 빌어요.

English Translation : Hi everyone, my name is Tony, and I’ve been learning Korean for about 2 years now. I am currently attending graduate school in Australia where I study physical therapy. In my free time, I usually work out or eat yummy food with my friends at cafes or restaurants. I also like to explore new places while travelling. There’s no special reason for why I’m studying Korean, I’m just drawn to the charm of the Korean language. Study hard and I wish you all good luck.

[Useful Expressions]

대학원 : graduate school

somewhere 에 다니다 : to go somewhere regularly (as a student, member, employee etc.)

전공: major

새롭다: to be new / 새로운 곳: new places

탐험하다 : to explore

특별한 이유: special reason

Noun 의 매력에 끌리다 : to be attracted/drawn toward the charm of noun (끌다: to attract, 끌리다: to be attracted)

행운을 빌다 : to wish someone good luck

3. Shola from the UK (영국 사람 숄라) 🇬🇧

Korean Transcript: 여러분 안녕하세요, 숄라라고 합니다! 저는 원래 런던 사람인데 지금은 에딘버러 대학교서 의학을 전공하고 있어요. 어렸을 때부터 의사가 되고 싶었기 때문이에요. 저는 취미가 많은데 새로운 언어를 배우는 것도 좋아하고 또 친구들이랑 놀거나 음악을 듣는 것도 좋아해요. 케이팝과 한국 드라마를 좋아해서 한국어를 배우기 시작했는데, 이제는 시작한 지 한 1년 정도 됐어요. 저는 여행도 좋아하는데 이번 여름 방학에 한국 여행을 갈 거예요. 그 전에 한국어 실력이 더 늘었으면 좋겠어요. 여러분 항상 건강하시고, 열심히 일하고 열심히 노세요!

English Translation : Hello everyone, I’m shola. I’m originally from London but I’m currently studying medicine at Edinburgh university. I’ve always wanted to become a doctor since I was little. I have a lot of hobbies, and I like learning new languages as well as hanging out with friends or listening to music. I started learning Korean because I like K-pop and K-drama, and it’s been around 1 year now. I also really enjoy travelling, and I am going to visit Korea this summer. [name] (이)라고 해요 / 합니다 : I go by [name] – commonly used when introducing your name.

원래 : originally, by nature/birth

의학: medical studies

어렸을 때 : when I was young

취미: hobby

Verb-기 시작하다: to start verb-ing

한 + [time/measure word] 쯤/정도 : around ~ (e.g. 한 1년 정도 : around 1 year, 한 다섯 개 쯤 : about five items)

친구들이랑 놀다: to hang out with friends

실력이 늘다: for one’s skill/ability to improve

이번 여름 방학에 : this summer (vacation)

여행을 가다: to take/go on a trip, to travel
