Lesson 7. How to say, “Hello, Thank you, I am sorry, Goodbye and Good night”

 1. Hello

1) 존댓말 (formal, polite) :

  • 안녕하십니까? (Very Formal)
  • 안녕하세요 (Formal, Polite)
 

2) 반말 (casual, less polite) :

  • 안녕!
 

    2. Thank you.

1) 존댓말 :

  • 감사합니다.
  • 고맙습니다.
  • 감사해요.
  • 고마워요.
 

2) 반말 :

  • 고마워.
 

    3. Sorry.

1) 존댓말 :

  • 죄송합니다.
  • 미안합니다.
  • 죄송해요.
  • 미안해요.
 

2) 반말 :

  • 미안해
 

4. Good bye!

1) 존댓말 :

  • 안녕히 계세요. – Literally, Stay peacefully. (Used when the other person is staying, and you’re leaving.)
  • 안녕히 가세요. – Literally, Go peacefully. (Used when the other person is leaving, or both parties are leaving.)
  • 잘 있어요. – Literally, Stay well. (Used when the other person is staying, and you’re leaving.)
  • 잘 가. – Literally, Go well. (Used when the other person is leaving, or both parties are leaving.)
 

2) 반말: 

  • 안녕! – As you can notice, 안녕 means both hello and goodbye in casual language.. 
  • 잘 있어
  • 잘 가
 

5. Good night.

1) 존댓말: 

  • 안녕히 주무세요. Sleep peacefully.
  • 잘 자요. Sleep well.
  • 굿밤 보내세요. Spend a good night. [Slangword / 굿밤: 굿(Good’s Korean pronunciation)+ 밤(night)]
 

2) 반말

  • 잘 자!
  • 굿밤! [Slangword]

(Note that it’s not very common to say “Good morning (좋은 아침이에요)” or “Good afternoon(좋은 오후예요)” for greeting in Korean. You may just say “안녕하세요.”)
